In this new photographic series Sara Angelucci takes 19th century portrait cabinet cards with painted forest backdrops and allows the trees to reclaim the figure rather than be a mere background to them. In so doing, she challenges us to rethink this pictorial tradition and to rebalance our current thinking around our relationship to nature—here figure becomes ground. As Simon Schama writes in Landscape and Memory: “The wilderness, after all, does not locate itself, does not name itself…At the very least it seems right to acknowledge that it is our shaping perception that makes the difference between raw matter and landscape.”
