Modern Canadian tree planters have earned a place in the nation's lore, art, and history. In this series we see them as never before. Trading her planting bags for studio lights, Rita Leistner returns to the bush to take formal portraits of tree planters in action, underscoring the extreme athleticism of these hardcore, piece-rate industrial labourers. The enhanced lighting captures a level of detail and dimensionality that evokes dioramas in a natural history museum while revealing the planters' animal relationship to the land in a heroic portrayal of the men and women reforesting Canada, one tree at a time.
