Pekka Turunen was born in Joensuu, in the east of Finland, in 1958. He bought his first camera with his own money when he was 10 years old. He later studied photography in Helsinki, at the celebrated Helsinki School. He now lives on an old farm in Kemiö, in southwest Finland, with his photographer wife and two lively children. He is the proud owner of a tractor. He heats his house and workshop with wood.
No matter where you’re going to, it’s good to know where you’ve come from. Part and parcel of Pekka Turunen’s work is Finland and the Finnish people. Even if a picture has no people in it, there is still a human connection – something which tells of their way of life, their values, their attitude towards the environment, of Finland. A picture will often depict something which is rarely seen in today’s press. There where ideas and reality meet, there is also a photograph.
