For over 25 years Carl Zimmerman's photographs have explored utopian architectural imagery, often incorporating handmade architectural masquettes. His work has been shown in international and national venues that include the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Art Gallery of Hamilton and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia among others. His exhibitions "Lost Hamilton Landmarks" and "Landmarks of Industrial Britain" toured Canada in 1997 and 2006-2008 respectively.
