(b. 1978, Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, NL)
Eldred Allen is an Inuk photographer from Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, NL, who has garnered attention for his expansive and stunningly lit landscape and wildlife scenes in his community. Allen’s artistic journey began in 2018 with the purchase of his first camera. As a self-taught photographer, he creates new perspectives in photographing everyday landscapes, wildlife, and activities utilizing both a handheld camera and UAV/drone perspective. Driven to elicit awe and excitement, he creates a radically different view of the ordinary. His composition and colouring elevate their everyday subject matter to the extraordinary.
Allen has exhibited his photography in the solo exhibition “Resemblance” at The Rooms, St. John’s, Newfoundland. He has also participated in group exhibitions including “INUA” at the Winnipeg Art Gallery/Qaumajug, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Allen will participate in the upcoming group exhibition “Vanishing Ice” at The Room, St. John’s, Newfoundland in 2022. In addition, Allen has received grants from ArtsNL and the Canada Council for the Arts, Knowing and Sharing: The Arts and Cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples Travel Grant.
